What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. They are the active ingredients in marijuana and hemp, and are responsible for the plant’s psychoactive and medicinal effects. There are over 100 different acidic cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, each with its own unique properties and potential benefits.

The most well-known cannabinoid is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects, and is derived from THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid). THC is a powerful compound that binds to receptors in the brain and produces a feeling of euphoria, relaxation, and altered perception. However, federal regulations say that hemp plants are only allowed to have less than 0.3 THC percent by dry weight, and thus dont produce any significant psychoative effects.

Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) is another important cannabinoid found in hemp and marijuana, and most recognized for its decarboxylated form, CBD (cannabidiol). Unlike THC, CBD oil does not produce a high and is known for its potential therapeutic effects. CBD oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and anti-seizure properties, and may be effective in treating a range of medical conditions.

Best way to consume cannabis plants

Cannabinoids can be extracted from the cannabis plant and used in various forms, including oils, tinctures, vapes, and edibles. While many people are familiar with smoking cannabis, it is not the best way to consume cannabinoids for the health benefits. Inhaling smoke from any burned organic matter causes production of free radicals, which lead to damaging compounds that circulate in the body.

Finding high quality CBD products and CBDA products that have third party lab tested certificates of analysis (CoA) are important to identifying what to buy. If you are not familiar with how to read a CoA, check out our CBD CoA Guide on how to interpret the results.

The best ways to get the most health benefits of CBDA oils and CBD oil:

  • Edibles
  • Tinctures – in coconut oil or hemp seed oil
  • Sprays
  • Creams

While each one of these might have different applications, they will not have the harmful side effects from smoking or vaping cannabis plants or cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant.

CBDA oil what is CBDA

What are acidic cannabinoids?

Acidic cannabinoids are a type of cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant in its natural, acidic state. The most well-known acidic cannabinoid is cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which is the precursor to the popular cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD).

Acidic cannabinoids are not commonly found on the market because conventional purification processes use heat, leading to the production of their decarboxylated counterparts. Decarboxylation is a process that removes the acidic group from the molecule, making it more stable and changing its health benefits. As a result, most acidic cannabinoids are converted into their decarboxylated form before they are used in products.

Acidic cannabinoids are primarily found in the trichomes of the cannabis plant, which are the small, hairlike structures that produce the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes. They can also be found in smaller amounts in the leaves and stems of the plant.

Currently, research on acidic cannabinoids is limited, but some studies have suggested that they may have potential therapeutic benefits. For example, CBDA oil has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea effects in animal studies. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of acidic cannabinoids like cannabidiolic acid.

CBDA oil vs CBD

One of the main differences between CBDA and CBD is their absorption in the body. CBDA oil is over 450-1000% better absorbed than CBD oil, making it a highly potent compound at low to moderate doses.

Another key difference between CBDA and CBD is the potential health benefits they offer. While both have been shown to have some therapeutic potential, CBDA has been shown to have unique health benefits of its own. For example, research has suggested that CBDA oil may have anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties, and overlaps with some of the effects of CBD as a potential anxiolytic and analgesic.

One reason we may see more CBDA oil products in the future is that CBDA has a number of potential health benefits that are not yet fully understood. As research into the therapeutic potential of CBDA continues, we may see more products that contain this cannabinoid on the market.

Additionally, the rise of new extraction methods and technologies has made it possible to extract CBDA from the cannabis plant in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. Natural Dos has pioneered a new purification technology that allows us to capture only the acidic cannabinoids. This may also contribute to the increased availability of CBDA oil products in the future. Overall, while there are some similarities between CBDA and CBD, there are also some important differences that make CBDA a unique and potentially valuable cannabinoid.

Benefits of CBDA oil

CBDA Oil the health benefitsIn addition to the enhanced absorption of CBDA alone, new studies are showing that CBDA products that contain full spectrum cannabinoids further boost the absorption of CBDA to over 100% greater than CBD oil. This highlights the importance of CBDA products using full spectrum cannabinoids.

Because CBDA has enhanced bioavailability compared to CBD, a 50mg dose of CBDA oil could yield as much absorption as 250mg to 500mg of CBD oil.

The unique molecular structure of CBDA has played an important role in targeting a number of physiological functions within the endocannabinoid system. These include anxiety, sleep, pain, inflammation, and nausea. While this may seem like a lot, the underlying mechanisms targeted by CBDA oil may manifest into these different symptoms.

Like CBD, CBDA also helps the endocannabinoid system, including interactions with CB1 and CB2 receptors, with a preference for CB2.

Anti inflammatory potential of CBDA

New studies have found that CBDA may have powerful anti inflammatory properties, in similar fashion to some traditional OTC drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin. In vitro research finds that CBDA was able to inhibit the enzyme COX 2 (cyclooxygenase 2), a critical protein involved in the production of inflammatory prostaglandins.

Not only was CBDA oil found to inhibit COX 2 activty, follow up studies show that it can target the expression of the gene itself. Using MDA breast cancer cell lines, CBDA was able to prevent the production of COX 2 by regulating upstream transcription factors. These dual actions could make CBDA a potent anti inflammatory for pain and inflammation related conditions.

CBDA oils and anxiety

Many customers and studies have reported on the benefits of CBD oil products for helping anxiety. However, one of the drawbacks with CBD oil is the amount of CBD you need to get a therapeutic benefit. For example, in a social anxiety test, 600mg of CBD was found to yield a clinically relevant result.

Recent progress in pre clinical trials show that CBDA oil can activate a number of receptors, including the 5HT1A receptor in the brain. This protein is involved in regulating serotonin function, and is a classic target for SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). CBDA regulation of this important neurotransmitter could explain some of the study results that show improvement in anxiety with CBDA oil products.

CBDA oil and nausea

One of the more well studied effects of CBDA oil is on nausea, which is also a classic use of cannabis plants, especially in chemotherapy patients. CBDA oils have been shown in multiple pre clinical trials to produce significant anti nausea effects. These properties seem to come from the ability of CBDA to act on specific receptors in the endocannabinoid system.

How to use CBDA oil

CBDA oil like CBD has minimal side effects, and usually depends on the amount taken. Because of the higher absorption of CBDA oil, you can take much less of it to get a health benefit.

For example, a 25mg dose of CBDA will yield a blood concentration equal to around 200-500mg of CBD. We put together a CBDA dosing guide to help understand the differences in absorption.

Vaping CBDA will destroy CBDA

CBDA is decarboxylated to CBD when exposed to high heat. Thus, if you vape CBDA oil, you are only absorbing CBD and not CBDA. However, if that is your preferred method, vape absorption is very strong.

Ingestion and under the tongue

CBDA oil products, such as tinctures and edibles are a great way to get the health benefits. Absorption rates for compounds placed under the tongue (sublingual) can be very high, so putting a few drops of tincture there is effective.

Because CBDA is so well absorbed when ingested, using edibles is also a great way to get CBDA and gummies taste amazing!
