Hemp plants dont contain very little THC, the compound that elicits a psychoactive effect. CBD does not have the ability to get you “high”, so you dont need to worry about taking it before work, or when driving.

So if CBD isn’t about the high, what’s all the fuss about? The excitement comes from CBD’s potential in helping manage various health issues—a natural remedy for conditions like epilepsy, chronic pain, and even inflammation.

Alright, so now we’ve come to the really interesting part. We’ve seen what researchers have found, but I bet you’re asking, “How does CBD possibly work its magic on social anxiety?” It’s kind of like trying to crack the code on a secret recipe. But don’t worry, we’ve got this! Let’s dive into some hypotheses and put them into words that make sense.

Clinical trials and CBD for anxiety disorders

So where is the research on the topic of CBD and social anxiety disorders?

  1. Japanese teenagers with diagnosed social anxiety disorder (SAD) were given 300mg of CBD per day to find out. Based on multiple questionaires, the participants reported significant improvements after 4 weeks of use. We should note that this study only had 17 individuals who took the CBD and 20 in the placebo group.
  2. This study used a simulated public speaking test where 24 people diagnosed with SAD symptoms were split into either the CBD group or placebo group. The researchers found that 600mg of CBD was needed to get a significant difference in anxiety scores when participants underwent the simulated public speaking test.
  3. Patients diagnosed with panic disorder or social anxiety disorder were split into a double blinded placebo controlled enrollment. CBD at 300mg per day was used up to 6 months, followed by mental health testing by a professional. The results showed no statistical improvement at the end of the study.

While some studies show substantial improvements in treating social anxiety disorder symptoms, there are some that do not.

This suggests that there is likely an important role for CBD and cannabinoids in treating social anxiety disorder, but that it probably depends on what the mechanisms are that give rise to the anxiety.

In other words, it works for some but not everyone!

CBD Core Mechanisms for Anxiety

With all the studies on CBD and cannabinoids, how do they actually work? The mechanisms can be complicated, but lets take a 20,000 foot view of the main components likely involved in its effects on anxiety:

  1. The endocannabinoid system (ECS): This is largely defined by scientists as a set of receptors and signaling processes that the endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG) can act on. Of course, we now know that the cannabinoids from the hemp plant, such as CBD and CBDA, can also interact in this system giving it a boost or reset in many cases. The ECS has been found to help regulate your mood through CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain.
  2. The serotonin system: This is a more recent revelation that cannabinoids like CBD and CBDA can also interact with the serotonin receptor 5HT1A. This is a well established serotonin receptor that has long been a target for anti-depression drugs called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). However, there is not evidence at this point that cannabinoids like CBD have any of the withdrawal effects commonly seen in the SSRI class of drugs.

So, when we think about CBD’s potential to fight social anxiety, we see a multifaceted approach—oiling those cogs, offering some personal training, and maybe even helping your brain better regulate your mood. Who knew so much was going on in there?

In addition, CBDA is over 500% better absorbed than CBD, making it the most potent cannabinoid on the market!

  • Anti nausea effects: Pre clinical trials show that CBDA can help with nausea, most likely through the 5HT1A receptor.
  • Enhanced absorption: Bioavailability (how well a compound gets into the blood stream) is critical for any compound that you are looking to get a benefit from. Because CBD has poor absorption, it typically needs to be taken in a much higher dose. Thus CBDA may the next step in hemp based plant relief.
